Humboldt was one of the most prominent scientists of his time. Among other achievements, he was one of the first to theorise the drifting of landmasses via plate tectonics and mapped the distribution of plants on three continents. He also made observations on the impacts of local, human-induced climate change. He is known to some as ‘the father of ecology’ and ‘the father of environmentalism’. He was celebrated amongst his peers and those that followed, including Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He provided travel narratives and monographs on astronomy, botany, geology, mineralogy and zoology.
